Skill Level Descriptions
Just as everything we do in life has different levels of mastery, so it is the same for model railway kits. We have divided all our kits into five Skill Levels. These levels are described below. All Skill Levels require the modeller to be able to follow written instructions and/or read and interpret plan drawings. These levels are determined by the detail that is applied to the models that you are trying to create. Read on to find which skilled level you are at!
The Skill Levels are:
Skill Level 1 (SL1) products can be built without prior model building experience, and require very minor assembling using simple hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 1 kits require filling and cutting. Suitable for a 12 + year old child under adult guidance. Recomended tools include: Hobby mat, Hobby Knife, Fine Files, Paint Brush, Tweezers and superglue.
Skill Level 2 (SL2) products require slightly more skill and some prior experience using hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 2 require cutting and filling plus the shaping and fitting of brass hand rails. Recomended tools include: All those from SL1 plus Pin Vice, Hobby Drill Pieces and Pointy Nose Pliers.
Skill Level 3 (SL3) products are intended for the person having some prior experience building model railway kits. Skill Level 3 kits contain parts that require cutting, fitting, filling, shaping and fitting brass hand rails. The Skill Level 3 products include a very large portion of our open and flat wagon range. Skill Level 4 (SL4) products are intended for the experienced modeller. Before building a Skill Level 4 kit it is recommended the modeller construct a Skill Level 3 kit.
Skill Level 5 (SL5) products are for the expert model railway builder.
The three most important characteristics for a successful modeller are patience, patience and yet more patience. Before cutting or gluing anything give a lot of thought to the task at hand. Modelling the railways is a very rewarding hobby. Take your time and enjoy it.From January 2012 we will aiming to display the skill level on each of our products.
